Mayan Head mh-001

The Maya nobility marked their faces in a number of ways. Nose plugs of jade, shell and perhaps wood were worn in a hole piercing the septum of the nose. Lips plugs have also been identified, although these are rarely shown pictorially. Faces were painted in patterns, such as skulls, to resemble the visages of gods or other supernaturals, and body painting in different patterns was common.
